The Severn's Club - Formerly Stourport Workmen's Club

Image

Re-opened in August 2023 after a period of closure and uncertainty, the Severn's Club (formerly Stourport Workmen’s Club) is a multipurpose entertainment venue for the locals of Stourport and surrounding area to once again enjoy and be part of.

The Severn's Club appeal stretches from those looking for live entertainment, a relaxed drink, a meeting place for friends and family, to those wanting to play traditional and modern bar sports such as snooker, pool and smart darts.

Members and non-members can find popular beers, wines and spirits, as well as guest ales and more at our fully stocked bars.

A fully equipped, purpose built entertainment theatre named the Baldwin Suite, after original Stourport Workmen’s Club founder and first President, Alfred Baldwin, is also being renovated. Live acts, discos and entertainment will take place here. This is in addition to our Main Lounge stage where we host bands, singers and entertainers throughout the week already.

We also have a smaller separate function room available for hire to those wishing to hold awards evenings, meetings, small parties and more.

The Severn's Club really does have it all under one-roof, the exception of course being our beer garden situated out front, where you'll find comfortable seating to enjoy an ice cold beer on a hot afternoon!

The History of the Club

Image

The Severn's Club, formerly known as the Stourport Workmen's Club, has a rich history that can be traced back to the early nineteenth century. Initially, it was a in a private residence located at 2 Lombard Street, belonging to George Pearce Baldwin and his second wife, Sarah Chalkley Stanley. They were the grandparents of Stanley Baldwin, who later became three-time Prime Minister.

The house was a bustling hub for their ten children, with the majority likely being born there. Notably, their son Alfred, who would achieve fame and fortune, went on to be the father of Stanley Baldwin. Among their four daughters were Lucilla, Eliza, Sarah Ann, and Mary Jane, each affectionately referred to as "The Pert, The Pretty, The Pious, and The Proud," though it's unclear who each description referred to.

Unfortunately, George Pearce Baldwin passed away suddenly at the age of 52 in 1840 from scarlet fever and was laid to rest in the family vault in St Michael's churchyard. Sarah Baldwin continued to live in the family home until her death in 1874. Their daughter Sarah Ann Robinson, widowed in 1871, resided on a different part of Lombard Street before eventually moving away and passing away in Weston-super-Mare.

Around 1900, the premises became the Stourport Workmen's Club. Prior to that, the club had merged with the Stourport Literary Institution, which boasted an impressive library of over 1,000 volumes. Alfred Baldwin became the first President of the newly merged organisation. The exact date of the construction of the single-story extension on the left side of the building, serving as a Reading Room and a place for billiards, remains uncertain. However, it is said that Stanley Baldwin himself funded its creation.

The Stourport Workmen's Club flourished during the 1960s, and a decision was made to relocate to purpose-built premises. By 1968, the club had established itself in a new building off Lickhill Road, thanks to the generous land provided by Vales. The decision to move was partly influenced by a local authority proposal to demolish 2 Lombard Street for road widening, although the demolition never occurred. Eventually, the building was renamed the Severn's Club and later became known as The Outback, and then The Lodge.

After temporarily closing its doors in August 2022, the Stourport Workmen's Club underwent an extensive refurbishment and reopened in August 2023 under the new name, the Severn's Club.
